How to install mods and modpacks: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge

What a mod loader is, how Forge, Fabric and NeoForge differ, installing mods by hand or with a modpack launcher, where to download safely and how to join a modded server.

Mods turn Minecraft into a different game: factories, magic, Pokémon-like creatures, new dimensions. The plain Minecraft client cannot load mods, though — you need a mod loader. This guide covers the loaders, installing mods by hand or with a modpack launcher, where to download safely and how to join a modded server without errors.

Mods, plugins and modpacks

  • Mod — changes the game itself. Usually it must be installed on the server and in your client.
  • Plugin — server-only add-on (Paper, Spigot and similar). You join with the normal client. Most minigame, anarchy and survival servers run on plugins.
  • Modpack — a ready set of mods for one game version. A modpack server expects you to have exactly the same set.
  • Client-side mods — only for you: performance, minimaps, shaders. Many servers ban mods that give an advantage (X-ray, autoclickers), so read the rules.
Tip: if a server card on Minecraft-Servera has no mods warning, the normal client is most likely enough. See the Java joining guide.

Loaders: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt

LoaderIn shortWatch out for
ForgeThe oldest and best known; many classic tech and magic packsEspecially common on old versions such as 1.7.10 and 1.12.2
NeoForgeA fork of Forge from 2023; many big mods moved to it on newer versionsForge and NeoForge mods are not always interchangeable on new versions
FabricLightweight and quick to updateMost mods also need Fabric API
QuiltA fork of FabricRuns most Fabric mods

The key rule: game version, loader and mod version must match. Each mod page lists the versions and loaders it supports.

Option 1. The server's own launcher

Many modded servers ship a launcher that downloads the right game version, loader, mods and settings for you. Use the Download launcher button on the server page (when the owner provided one) or the official website — never a random mirror. Browse servers with their own launcher.

Option 2. A modpack launcher

If the server uses a known modpack, install it with a modpack launcher: the CurseForge or Modrinth apps, or third-party launchers such as Prism Launcher.

  1. Install the launcher from its official site.
  2. Search for the modpack the server names.
  3. Pick the same modpack version as the server.
  4. Install, launch, and add the server under Multiplayer.

Each modpack gets its own folder, so mods never mix.

Option 3. By hand with the official launcher

Step 1. Install the loader

  1. Run the needed game version once in the official launcher.
  2. Download the installer from the official Forge, NeoForge or Fabric website.
  3. Run it and choose Install client (installers need Java).
  4. A new installation/profile appears in the official launcher — select it.

Step 2. Find the mods folder

  • Windows — Win + R, %appdata%\.minecraft, folder mods.
  • macOS — ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods.
  • Linux — ~/.minecraft/mods.

If mods is missing, start the game once with the loader profile or create the folder.

Tip: give each installation its own game directory in the launcher settings, so mods for different servers never clash.

Step 3. Add the mods

  1. Download the .jar files for your game version and loader.
  2. Put them into mods — do not unzip them.
  3. Check dependencies on each mod page: most Fabric mods need Fabric API, some need libraries such as Architectury or Cloth Config.
  4. Launch the game. A Mods button (Forge/NeoForge) or the mods list means it works.

Downloading safely

Use Modrinth, CurseForge, the author's own site or GitHub, or links given by the server itself. Avoid re-upload "mirror" sites, "cracked" or "cheat" mods, archives with .exe files and any request to disable your antivirus.

Important: a mod never asks for your Microsoft password. A "mod tool" asking for your login is a scam — see how to avoid scams.

Joining a modded server

Which mods are needed

On Minecraft-Servera the server card shows:

  • a Mods required warning with a list — for Forge and NeoForge servers the list comes straight from the server's ping answer;
  • a Mods block on the server page with mod names and versions (when the server reports them);
  • the Mods row in the server info: "Not required" or the loader;
  • a Mods filter in the catalogue by loader: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt or none.

The ping list tells you which pack it is, but confirm the exact set with the server — many publish their full modpack.

Step by step

  1. Find the server's game version and loader.
  2. Install its launcher or modpack, or the mods by hand.
  3. Start the game with that profile.
  4. Add the server under Multiplayer and connect.

Common errors

  • Mod rejections / mismatched mod list — your mods differ from the server's. Compare names and versions.
  • Crash on start — usually a missing dependency or a wrong mod version. Check the logs or crash-reports folder; the log often names the missing mod.
  • Incompatible client — check the game and loader versions.
  • Out of memory — large packs need more RAM for the game; set it in the installation or modpack launcher settings.
