How to join a Minecraft Java server: step by step

Picking the right version, adding a server in Multiplayer, and fixing Outdated client, Connection refused and Failed to verify username.

1. Get the address and version

The server page shows the IP (copy it), the supported versions and warnings such as "Licence required", "Mods required", "Bedrock only" or "Whitelist". The default port is 25565.

2. Launch the right version

In the official launcher open Installations, create a new installation with the server's version and play it. Most servers accept a range of versions via ViaVersion, but the native version has fewer glitches.

3. Add the server

Multiplayer, Add Server, paste the address, Done, then Join Server. Direct Connection works too.

4. Register

Offline-mode servers ask you to type /register password password in chat, then /login password next time. Never reuse your email or Microsoft password.

Common errors

  • Outdated client / server — switch to a version the server supports.
  • Connection refused — server down, typo in the address, a Bedrock address used in Java, or a firewall. Check it with the status checker.
  • Failed to verify username — the server requires a licensed account; re-login in the launcher.
  • Not whitelisted — apply on the server's website or Discord.
  • Mods required — install the matching Forge/NeoForge/Fabric pack or the server's launcher.
