The word "wipe" scares newcomers: you build a base for weeks and then it all disappears. But for many servers a wipe is a normal part of the game, and for some players it's the most exciting event of the season. Here's what a wipe is, why servers do it and how to prepare.
What a wipe is
A wipe resets game progress on a server: the map, inventories, money, ranks, or some of these. After a wipe every player starts from the same position.
Wipes come in different forms:
| Type | What is reset | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Full | world, inventories, money, builds | anarchy, griefing, many seasonal modes |
| Map | only the world; inventories and balance are kept or partly carried over | survival, SkyBlock |
| Partial | specific things: economy, leaderboards, resources in a zone | economy servers, side modes |
| Seasonal | all season progress; top-player rewards sometimes remain | Prison, OneBlock, seasonal modes |
Important: purchased ranks behave differently after a wipe. On some servers they're permanent, on others they last until the wipe. It's always stated in the rules or the store — read it before buying.
Why servers wipe
At first glance a wipe is an inconvenience, but there are clear reasons for it.
1. A level playing field
A few weeks after launch the most active players have everything: the best armour, huge bases, millions of coins. A newcomer has nothing to do on such a server — they get killed or can't compete. A wipe levels everyone again.
2. A living economy
Money and resources pile up over time, prices inflate and everything loses value. A reset brings back interest in gathering and trading.
3. Updates and a new map
Moving to a new game version, new plugins or changed rules is easier on a fresh map. Wipes often coincide with big server updates.
4. Performance
A huge map with thousands of builds and contraptions loads the server. A new world runs faster.
5. A community event
On anarchy and griefing servers the wipe is the main event. The first hours after a start usually see the highest player count: everyone rushes for the best spots and resources and forms clans.
How often wipes happen
There's no single rule:
- anarchy and griefing — often every few weeks or once a month;
- seasonal modes (Prison, OneBlock, SkyBlock seasons) — at the end of each season;
- survival and SMP — rarely: every few months, on a version change, or never;
- no-wipe servers — the world lives for years, and that's their main selling point.
If you want your builds to last, look at servers without wipes. If you love starting from scratch and racing for resources, pick anarchy or griefing servers. How they differ from survival: Anarchy vs survival.
How to find out the wipe date
Servers announce wipes in their channels in advance, and Minecraft-Servera collects those announcements for you.
- Wipes and events calendar. The calendar shows events with dates taken from server news; you can filter by "Wipe".
- News. The news section has a "Wipe" filter with server posts about wipes found on their Telegram and VK.
- Server page. Each server page shows its latest news, including wipe announcements.
- Official channels. Follow the server's Telegram or Discord — links are on the server page.
Tip: with an account on our site you can subscribe to a server and get notifications; the notification settings have a separate wipe option — a reminder a day before and when the wipe starts.
How to prepare
If your server is about to wipe
- Check the rules for what exactly is reset: world, inventory, balance, ranks.
- If a transfer is offered, find out what can be carried over and how.
- Take screenshots of your builds — they'll be gone afterwards.
- Agree with your team or clan on a meeting point on the new map.
If you want to join a fresh wipe
- Find the exact start time in advance (often given in Moscow time for Russian servers).
- Install the right game version and test that you can connect — beforehand, not at the last minute.
- Join a few minutes early: servers can be full in the first minutes.
- Plan your first hour: food, tools and shelter.
Signs of a fair wipe
A wipe itself is normal practice, but how a server runs it says a lot about the project. Good signs:
- The date is announced in advance — at least several days before, with an exact time.
- It's clear what gets reset and what stays: world, inventories, balance, ranks.
- There's a changelog — what's new after the wipe.
- Top players get rewards for the past season, if the rules promise that.
- Donation rules don't change retroactively: ranks sold as "permanent" survive the wipe.
Red flags: a sudden wipe without announcement, a "wipe" right after a big sale, refusing to explain what happened to purchased ranks. If you run into this, mention it in a review on the server page so other players know in advance.
Tip: before buying ranks on a wiping server, check the project's news for how previous wipes went. History says more than promises.
Wipes and newcomers
For a beginner, a fresh wipe is the best moment to join a wiping server: everyone starts equal, nobody has piles of resources yet, and people actively look for allies. Joining an anarchy server the day before a wipe is the opposite — you'll quickly lose whatever you gather.
FAQ
Is a wipe a way to cheat players?
Not if the server warns about it honestly and publishes the rules in advance. It's bad when a wipe happens suddenly right after a big store sale with no announcement — check reviews for such stories.
Can builds be restored after a wipe?
Usually not. Some servers publish the old map for download — follow the project's news.
Are there servers with no wipes at all?
Yes. Look for the no-wipe category and mentions in the description of how long the map has been running.
